BUG: msival2.exe - Windows 2003 Bug |
Apparently "MSIVAL2" doesn't work in Windows 2003, see MS knowledge base article "835459". You will get a message similar to:
MSIVAL2 Generated Output (filtered) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INIT ERROR Failed to create MSI Engine. Could not complete evaluation.
There is no workaround to this other than manual validation via "ORCA" or possibly via the use of "SMOKE.EXE". When will Microsoft start fixing bugs? I'm sure it probably would have taken less time to fix the bug than to update their web site with this information!
There is another command line tool available (name forgotten) I will investigate when I have some time, if you know let me know!
Microsoft Post 17/2/2005: Re: Orca validation? |
The issue with <$orca> and MsiVal2 validation on Windows Server 2003 is fixed in the upcoming Server SP1 release. You can also get it working again by downloading and installing the MSI 3.0 redistributable (http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=884016). - Carolyn Napier Microsoft Windows Installer Team
This information doesn't appear to be correct, however I've seen mention of Windows Installer 3.1 v2...
