DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC, complete with sound, graphics, mouse, (modem)?, etc., necessary for running many old DOS games that simply cannot be run on modern PCs and operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux and FreeBSD. However, it is not restricted to running only games. In theory, any DOS application should run in DOSBox, but the emphasis has been on getting DOS games to run smoothly, which means that communication, networking and printer support are still in early developement.

DOSBox also comes with its own DOS-like command prompt. It is still quite rudimentary and lacks many of the features found in MS-DOS, but it is sufficient for installing and running most DOS games.

In much the same way that OS/2 runs any 16 bit DOS or Windows, WMWARE allows you to run linux on NT (or other way around) etc.

While I'm not very happy about the fact that they do not support OS/2 at all, I am extremely impressed with the product.

As far as I'm concerned this is the best thing since sliced bread! I installed WIN98SE in a Vmware virtual machine watching it boot and all while surfing the internet in Windows 2000. I can network between the two physical machines I have and the WIN98SE virtual machine and I can access everything I have tried so far in the way of hardware under the virtual machine.

I also like the option which prompts you at the end of a session allowing you to forget all changes made to the operating system. This allows you to set up a virtual machine for testing and retesting something over and over again without having to worry about any possible effects from previous attempts.

Virtual PC for Windows is a powerful cross-platform solution that allows you to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single PC. If you have upgraded to a new operating system, yet need to run older legacy software, Virtual PC is your solution. Virtual PC allows you to manage and administer multiple operating systems and configurations from one desktop, extending your computing power and reducing costs. Perfectly suited for customer support, software developer, and web developer environments, the Virtual PC for Windows enables you to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single machine, either as individual windows or as background tasks, without having to repartition the hard drive or to reboot in order to move from one OS to another. The number of operating systems or virtual machines that can run simultaneously is limited only by the machine's memory. Each time you add a guest operating system, you are adding a virtual machine to your computer. These virtual machines operate independently of each other and do not affect your computer's host OS or the other guest operating systems installed. Each guest operating system becomes a virtual clean room that is isolated from the rest of your machine, so even if it crashes it will not affect any other virtual machine.

Benefits:

  • Run multiple operating systems on one PC - no hard drive partitioning needed, no reboot required
  • Run Legacy applications from Windows 95 or 98 while maintaining your host OS (e.g. Windows 2000)
  • Manage and administer multiple operating systems and configurations from one PC
  • Change operating systems with a click of a mouse
  • Easy installation - no complex setup
  • Safe, secure, and self-contained - applications running in each virtual machine are isolated and protected
  • No hard drive partitioning needed
  • Supports all popular network systems

Welcome to the unofficial list of which OSes work and which don't in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004.

A complete listing of all URLS is available if you are having trouble locating a URL.

About these Bookmarks

These bookmarks are of subjects or products I find useful (or think I may in the future). I never link to a site as a pre-condition for them linking to me! As I use Windows I am mainly interested in software for this operating system. Where good free software exists I generally only list the free software (I list some shareware and even some commercial software where it is exceptional).

If you have some completely free software (no adware and without timeouts or major restrictions) which you would like listed then please email me:

  1. The URL (direct to resource's page) - not to the download.
  2. A proposed category (existing one if possible)
  3. A short description
To bypass my SPAM filter the subject should begin "SUGGESTED LINK:".

Creating These Book Mark Pages

This page was automatically created from Windows internet shortcuts (or favorites) created with IE or Netscape (OS/2 WPS URLs can also be imported). You can comment any link or category and just about anything can be changed (links don't even need to be in tables). PPWIZARD, a free tool for Windows, Mac OS X, Unix or OS/2 built these pages using this source code .

All URLs are checked periodically using the my free URL validation tool (for Windows and OS/2). This ensures that very few if any links point to moved pages or return 404 errors etc.
